With oil prices moving higher and higher, power costs tend to follow the same trend. Given that our daily life depends very much on the consumption of electricity, getting your power from alternate sources is an attractive option.
The sun, water, and even wind are viable sources of energy. What’s more, they are renewable sources of energy as they are continuously present in our environment. More and more people now want to set-up their own windmill at their homes. With the many instructions to build a windmill available out there, it is up to you to find the one that is easy to comprehend.
Here are some helpful instructions to build a windmill:
Basically, there are several distinct types of windmills, based on the direction their blades spin:
1. The Horizontal upwind, where the shaft stands horizontally and the wind hits the blade before the tower;
2. The Horizontal downwind where the wind hits the tower prior to the blade; and
3. The Vertical Axis, mounted on short towers and its blades are pointing upwards.
Essentially, a windmill has four componants that must be given extra attention:
- base
- tower
- blades
- nacelle
In constructing this structure, the main objective is to maximize the conversion of the wind’s energy into electricity. Therefore, it should be high enough to take advantage of the wind’s energy in obstructed terrains - a customary tower usually stands at 5 feet.
The base must be strong and heavy compared with other parts, to assure a durable structure because it is the main foundation. It is advisable to use materials like sandbags or concrete, and in the case of a five-foot windmill, the base must be at least 18 inches square thick and 20 pounds heavy.
The tower supports the blade in capturing wind energy. There are many approaches when constructing it. You can either use guyed lattice or steel and pipe tubings or make them using a jin pole or crane.
The nacelle connects the blade to the tower and contains copper wires and magnets that run the blade and help convert the wind’s energy to electricity.
The blade is the propeller used to capture the wind’s energy, so it is necessary that the blades are able to gather the flow of the wind easily, turning with the least potential resistance.
Materials to be used for these parts must be lightweight, so you can make them from plastic or PVC pipes. Note that in strong winds and storms, the blades can pose a danger if separated from the structure, so be sure to lock in the blades tightly, keeping safety precautions in mind.
Considering that a simple windmill could cost at least $40,000, constructing one for personal use can be quite expensive, but utilizing what is around you can help you save some expenses.
It is therefore recommended to recycle parts in order to cut your expenses. Following these simple instructions to build a windmill will enable you to create one from scratch.

Solar Pool heaters can greatly reduce your energy costs. They’re more cost effective than either gas or heat-pump swimming pool heaters. You’ll be able to save on annual operating costs once a solar pool heater system is installed. Best of all, a solar swimming pool heater can be used in most climates.
The typical solar pool heater system consists of a solar collector, a filter, a pump, and a flow-control valve.
- The solar collector is the device which the pool water passes through, to be heated by the sun.
- The filter removes the dirt and debris before the water is pumped into the solar collector.
- The pump is the what circulates the water through the filter and solar collector, and brings it back into the swimming pool.
- And finally, there’s the flow-control valve. It is either an automatic or a manual device, which redirects the water through the solar collector.
A solar pool heater system works in the following manner:
The water from the pool is pumped through the filter and then enters the solar collector, where it is again heated before it returns to the pool. In hot climates, the solar collector can also be utilized to cool the pool. It does this by circulating the water at night.
Some solar pool collectors use sensors and a valve, which redirects water through the solar collector when the collector temperature is greater than the pool water temperature. When both temperatures are the same, the filtered pool water will not return to the collector but will simply return to the pool.
There are different types of solar pool heating systems. They differ in the types of materials they are made out of. You will need to find out which type is best for your region’s climate, and how to use it.
There are glazed and unglazed solar collectors. If the temperature in your area reaches above freezing, then you’ll probably just need an unglazed solar collector. This is made out of heavy-duty rubber or plastic, treated with a UV light inhibitor. Unglazed solar collectors are cheaper than their glazed counterparts, because the parts are inexpensive, and their design is simple.
Glazed solar collectors are typically made from copper tubing and aluminum plates, with iron-tempered glass covers. These are quite expensive, but in colder weather, this type of system is more efficient in heating pool water than unglazed collectors are. Glazed solar collector systems can also be used as domestic hot water heaters. Both types of solar pool heating systems need to have freeze protection when used in harsh cold weathers.
As you can see, solar pool heater systems can be a good investment. You’ll save a lot of money in terms of energy costs, in the long run.

Energy saving has become everybody’s bound duty in the current dynamic environment.
Energy conservation is not merely reduced usage of fuel but also looking for a substitute fuel to prevent global warming and atmospheric pollution.
The air Pollution and global warming can be reduced to some extent by using bio diesel and bio gas as fuels.
Storage cells and solar energy driven cars are being created.
Creation and operation of such sources of conveyance need to be started and persuaded, to be utilized in a big measure.
To save the planet we inhabit, we must do things to help save our ozone. Exhaust from vehicles produces pollution. The more trees we cut down, the more the earth struggles to stop global warming.
The solar cooker, which provides energy from the sun and converts it to power to cook with, should be used by people as an alternative to LPG and the microwave oven.
These are harmless and let us encourage all homes to become homes run on solar energy in the future so that we make the planet a liveable and lovable place for our next generation.
A solar power roof no longer means adding square mirrored tiles to the roof of your home to make it solar efficient.
Those who want to buy solar roof panels which look like traditional shingles it is possible with today’s designs and materials.
With solar shingles you have the option of doing a full or partial installation on your roof top.
The solar portion of the roof is then connected to wiring which leads into collector or combiner box.
There are multiple types of systems. This runs into certain equipment which powers the home.
One type is a system which is not connected to your utility company’s lines. This means that you use the solar power to power your own home alone.
As the climate and solar system in most instances does not provide or store enough energy to power the home it is better to add battery backup system.
The other type is a solar system which is connected to the utility power lines.
Under this system you can generate solar power for your home as well as be connected to the utility grid if you need additional power or have any type of failure with the solar and battery system.
When we made our new house, I was not unduly worried about interiors and such things because I had entrusted the work to one reputed company and all I had to do was give my preferences and release funds as and when they required.
My only concern was to look for a good company which could take of residential solar power supply.
Since the city we had moved to, was not still aware of the importance of solar power, we had to really scout around looking for a good supplier of solar equipment, but our efforts did not bear fruit.
Finally to get the job done we had to call a technician from the nearby city.
obviously passenger were charged for his travel but never mind, he did good job for our satisfaction
Needless to add, we saved enough money on our future electricity bills, and we could absorb our expenditure on solar panels.

Someday, hopefully, we will be able to derive a lot of our power from more environmentally friendly sources.
Im betting on the power of the sun, for one. If I ever win the lottery, I’m going to get my house fitted with solar panels so we dont use as much regular electricity. If you want to benefit from solar electrcity you have to live somewhere that gets a lot of sunshine.
thats probably more problematic’especially if you have a housing association or need special zoning requirements.
Apparently just weatherizing your house–making sure the windows are well-insulated, going around with a caulking gun and sealing the cracks–even relatively small changes along those lines can make a big difference. I heard theres a special program to help people do that if they cant afford to do it on their own.
Too bad theres no special solar panel installation program, or I would definitely sign up for that one.
The demand for oil is going up while the availability is going down. Very soon in the future there will be no oil remaining.
As a result, renewable energies attain increasing significance for our world wealth. We have to ensure that we have the technical know how to counter the circumstances once the oil is fully exhausted.
Using solar panels is one of the most important methods of generating renewable energy.
Solar panels can be installed nearly anywhere. People install solar panels on the roof of their homes in order to cut down their electricity bills in the future and to make a contribution to a greener and safer environment.
Without any emissions or the risk of a nuclear fallout, large solar plants are being set up in order to generate electricity in an alternative way.
the ubiquitous availability of sunshine:
Whether you live in New York City or on the north pole ‘ you can use solar panels to generate electricity.
POWER SUPPLY TO APARTMENTS Due to certain exigencies like childrens higher studies, we had to move from a smaller city to a bigger city.
It was heart wrenching to leave my previous beautiful home driven by solar power.
I had conserved so much electrical energy and also saved a lot of money by way of reduced electricity bills.
We had decided to move to a new flat in a bigger town. The flat was almost at finishing stage when we purchased it.
Just then a thought struck to me and I requested the builder to arrange for solar power for home use geysers. He did not favour these actions at first, as he was not very comfortable soliciting quotations from companies and requesting additional pipe lines to introduce the bathrooms.
Since it was a small building consisting of just 14 apartments, it was not a strenuous affair and he ultimately agreed.
The solar heaters are installed in our bathrooms to get hot water nowadays.

Windmills were previously used in early times to pump water out of the ground to irrigate systems and to grind wheat. Through progressive technology, they soon found other useful purposes for these windmills. With a little human ingenuity, they have been made to produce electricity. But how do windmills works?
Wind power is a renewable kind of energy and it is a powerful source as well. It is considered as one of the most sensible and ideal sources because it produces zero emission and it is abundantly free. The best thing about the structure is that it can reduce the power bill of any home by 50 to 80 percent.
Basically this structure consists of 2 to 3 blades that are connected to a shaft. These blades are used to gather the wind energy that flows over them. The shaft meanwhile is wired into a generator, which then is connected to a battery. The generator is also called the heart of such a mechanism, as it is the one that converts the energy collected.
Upon gathering and converting, a battery is needed for storing all the collected energy, which then can be coupled or linked into a home’s electrical system.
How Do Windmills Work - The sequence:
- First of all, it reduces the speed of the wind using the blades, which work in the same way as airplane’s propellers.
- When the wind flows over the blades, these blades gather kinetic energy.
- Then the blades, which are connected to a drive shaft, revolve slowly and send a lot of the turning force into the gearbox.
- The gearbox then modifies this turning force, and instead of revolving slowly with a lot of force in every revolution, it goes quicker with less force in every revolution.
- At that moment, the generator, which is connected to the gearbox, creates electricity through the many magnets and copper wires inside of it.
An important factor that plays a vital role on the way this machine works is the size of the structure itself, as the amount of electricity produced depends upon it. The bigger it is, the stronger it can drive the shaft, which means the greater electricity it can produce.
You might also notice that some windmills are situated on top of valleys and mountains. This is because the blend of hot and cold air can create moving air. Sometimes they are positioned near bodies of water, because this also generates wind due to the change in temperature brought about by the sea and the sun.
One noteworthy fact on how windmills work is that a single turbine can produce 100 megawatts of electricity. Imagine then how much electricity a wind farm with large turbines grouped together can produce to provide bulk power to an electrical grid.

Solar and Wind Power For Residential
21st May 2009
Home wind power quickly became the most efficient and cheapest source of generating electricity today. The non-complex assembly and cheap cost is what makes the idea worthwhile. Other types of fuel poses grave threat to the environment and polluted it so there’s no better time than now that we utilize the wind energy resource. This is because wind energy is environment friendly, and it’s very easy to build.
As a concerned individual you can do your part for the climate by making a wind turbine and put it in top of your house. These home wind generators are customized to generate electricity for residents. The components and information that is required to build the generator are readily available in the internet. You can browse through many websites and buy the equipments you need.
You can begin your project of home wind generator by assembling the generator. It’s an easy task that is quickly done as many people have built their own generators. You can also go for the common magnet DC generators. This is one of the most common motor used for a home wind generator. Low voltage motors are a big no-no.
Also another good energy resource is the solar energy which can produce energy using the sun’s rays. This energy can be used as electricity that can be used as to power appliances and lights. Solar energy is synonymous with solar power and is becoming a lot more popular in homes because of it’s usefulness. Solar energy is renewable energy and it is not a threat to the environment. This is a great way of saving on some money the only expense you’ll have is only for the materials used to make the equipment.
Solar power used at home can also be used to heat your home. Annually, you can save a lot of money by using this alternate source of power. As it said above, solar energy is a big step for tomorrow because of the fact that it’s environment safe and it enables you to save. The developed countries have already considered making use of solar systems in their household. Wind and solar power usage have one common goal and that is they’re being looked upon as replacement to current ways of generating energy.
Wind power and solar power could both become important parts of future power production. They are popular with environment enthusiasts since they provide a fresh new option instead of fossil fuels that have polluted the environment for hundreds of years.
10th May 2009
Solar energy is becoming a well known and talked about topic by the general public, not just the scientists. It is in the headlines a lot because it is renewable and will reduce our carbon footprint. However, the question how does solar power work and how to build a solar panel remains a mystery to those who are not commonly acquainted with it. Some people know that it is just sunlight turned into electricity, but there are more things to understand.
The sun alone is a vast and immense source of energy that may be utilized as a great supply of electricity. The problem with fossil fuels are that they pollute the environment while digging them out of the ground, they pollute the environment when transporting them to their place of use and they pollute the environment when converting them into electricity, whereas the sun has none of these downsides. The environmental impact will be huge, in a positive way; carbon emissions will be reduced dramatically and hopefully slow down global warming.
Sunlight is not automatically converted into electricity. Sunlight undergoes a process where it is transformed into energy where it may be used. The light is captured or absorbed by a solar panel which is made up of silicon crystals, these are normally either monocrystalline or polycrystalline panels. Thin film solar panels are also used but this is still a very new and we don’t know how it compares over the long term. The electrons in the silicon start to move around when the sunlight hits it, it is this movement of the electrons which creates an electric charge.
The solar panels are often fitted to the roof of a house or are mounted on racks in the yard. Basically, a solar cell is termed as a device that captures the energy of the sunlight and transforms it to useable energy which is electricity. Each cell will generate a charge and this charge is converted into a current which passes from one cell to another and so building up the power generated. Each cell is individually manufactured so the electrons move around when exposed to sunlight so you can have part of the panel in the shade but the part in the sun will be producing electricity. The said movement is the one transmitted into the solar power hardware and thus, creates a current that may be used to power up appliances and electronic items.
Here is a simple way to understand how a solar panel works which might be useful to know if you are going to build a solar panel. Imageine having a pack of cards and throwing them up in the air, as they tumble to earth will spread all over the floor. As the light of the sun shines upon the solar cells, the electrons in the silicon also scatters randomly and generates solar electric power. Because of its simplicity; this enables many people to build a solar panel and save money by doing it themselves.
Now, when the electrons are triggered, it sends the power to the hardware that finally converts the sunlight into electricity. The hardware is scientifically created in order to make the sun’s energy into a power that is compatible with our electronic items. The output of the panel can generate anything from 1 watt to 200 watts depending on the size and number of solar cells.

You may be wondering how solar-powered lights work. Solar lights are used after the sun has gone down. So how can they operate?
First of all, understand that lighting devices which relies on solar power generally use a backup battery to operate. Solar cells are used to charge the battery during the day, and the battery powers the light during the night. The solar cells might be attached to the device itself, or might be located nearby.
This type of lighting is often used in remote locations, where conventional power sources are unavailable, and lights can not be connected to the power grid. They are also used for outdoor lighting, or as landscape lights around the home or garden.
Components of Solar Powered Lights
There are four basic components of a solar powered light. Many solar lighting systems are sold with these components already integrated, but it is good to know what they are:
- A charge controller
- The batteries
- The lamp
- The solar cells
When purchasing solar lights, the majority of the cost involved will be for the solar cells. These are the most expensive parts of the device or system. Be sure your system is installed within some type of weatherproof housing, so that the solar cells and electrical connections will withstand the elements. Ensure that the electrical parts are protected from moisture at all times.
The charge controller is like the “brain” of a solar-powered light. It protects the batteries from overcharging, and maximizes the electrical output of your solar cell array. It also controls the duration that the light can operate. Without a charge controller, your setup will not function properly.
Uses of Solar Lights
Most solar powered lights are used to illuminate outdoor gardens and walkways. The lights are generally cordless, and you can move them around easily without the need to dig ditches and run the wires underground.
One disadvantage solar lighting has, in comparison to conventional lighting, is that its stored solar power diminishes over time. That means that while the light may be strong during the first few hours of operation, it will then gradually grow dimmer as the night goes on. This might not be seen as a disadvantage by some, because most outdoor activities occur during the early evening hours. Different solar lighting systems also have different capacities, and some last longer than others.
Keep in mind that solar-powered lights depend on the sun to operate, and their performance can be influenced by weather conditions. If the weather is cloudy or rainy, then the battery power will be lesser than it would be on a sunny day. There are also different levels of quality, where solar lights are concerned – the cheaper ones tend to be less efficient and do not last as long.
Hopefully in the near future, improvements in solar technology can make solar lighting less expensive, and more efficient, even during bad weather.

It doesn’t make sense to me to rescue automotive corporations when what we are actually doing is giving them cash to produce obsolete technology. Hydrogen fuel cells seem to be the way to go. Here we have an economic crisis, a climate crisis, and an energy crisis but still we are paying auto makers to have their factory workers produce cars with internal combustion engines rather than having them use these hydrogen fuel cells. It is only reasonable to believe that we should be investing in this technology since it would be a threefold solution to our energy, climate, and economic crisis.
The government really needs to force auto makers to utilize newer technology so that our children and their children can one day drive their energy efficient cars on a clean, green planet and not have empty wallets because we wanted to continue funding our antiquated technology. we have to force our lawmakers to accept the fact that we want some thing like hydrogen fuel cells for a good future for our child as well as ourselves. Does anyone know about which water fuel cells are the best? Im looking to buy some. So if any one could point me in the right direction it would be helpful.
When it comes to its competitors, I would like a comparison between the two brands. I would like some information on how to install these bad boys. i am looking forward for some water fuel cells because there are some many practical uses. Im a little overwhelmed at the choices though and want to make sure the one I get is the one right for me. There seems to be many options depending on the users needs and wants and I just want to make sure that the one I get is a good fit with everything I want to use them for.
Does anyone has any questions or recommendations which gives advantage for the research of our water fuel cells? I really don’t think that cars run on hydrogen are the way of the future. Though in theory, it looks viable; the energy needs of the hydrogen car cannot be met, effectively. The hydrogen manufacturing process is so bad for the environment and produces so much carbon that it completed cancels out any benefits of actually driving the car. I would change my mind, if the scientists can manufacture hydrogen in a way; as clean and green, as possible.
I think that we require to use solar power as a renewable source of energey in power cars. I dont think the car could run with just a solar power on its hood, but maybe we could collect solar power, store it efficiently, and then use it to power electric cars. This can be done improvements in technology and supplementing it with wind enrgy. But will hydrogen work? As an environmentalist, I think not.
