George,

Thank-you for your question. At times photovoltaic solar systems will produce more electricity than is used by the home. This "extra electricity will either flow to storage capacity (batteries) or the extra will go to the utility company. If your area has what is called "net metering" the extra that went to the utility company will be credited to your account and you can use it later when the sun is not producing any electricity like at night. However, if your utility company does not allow for net metering - the extra electricity would be given to the utility company and that woud keep it without even a thank-you. An area that has no net metering would therefore need storage capacity. Storage capacity can double or even triple the cost of a solar system making the system unaffordable for most customers.

Alabama has no net metering currently and therefore little demand for solar exists in your area - meaning that few can offer the product.

Other states have also provided rebates and tax credit to help customers with the price of solar. Federal incentives are available; however, state and local incentives can again influence the affordability of solar.

We at Solarjoules encourage all interested in solar to contact your elected officials and demand that they support net metering and incentive programs for renewable energy.
