Franklin County school goes solar.
It’s a whole new world at a school in Rocky Mount where the staff and students rely on solar power to do normal every day things.
Things like crosswalks. Usually they run off electricity, but not at the Gereau Center. They’re solar powered.
Janitors also have solar powered lights that help them see a little better. The water heaters are even solar powered. The water even gets hot enough for the kitchen crew to keep the dishes spotless.
“I need to do this at my own house, really that’s what I think, cause it’s better for the environment,” said student Christianna Hunt.
“My stepdad is looking into solar panels now, and we’re just hoping we can make our house better,” said student Skyler Askey.
This Spring there are plans to break ground on a separate solar building that for the most part won’t function off of electricity at all.
Most of the money to do all this has come from grants. But teachers are always is need of corporate donors to keep the projects going.
